According to the District Attorney’s office, just two-year-old Mariah was found at home in a condition as if she had been abused. Mariah Alvarez was reportedly found in such a condition that she had a broken arm , Patches of hair that had been pulled, and bruises on her back. But Melissa Lucio said that Mariah had fallen down the stairs, due to which she was injured.

When Mariah was taken to the hospital, she was pronounced dead there. Mariah’s hand was later discovered to have been broken two to seven weeks before her death. And other information came out after the autopsy that Mariah had injuries on her spine, lungs and head.

After this incident, prosecutors said that Mariah died due to physical abuse. And Melissa Lucio was convicted of Mariah’s death. And Melissa Lucio was sentenced to death. Melissa Lucio was to be hanged on 27 April 2022.

But an appeals court stayed the execution of Melissa Lucio. The stay on the hanging was imposed by the appeals Court on 25 April 2022 itself.
